Question of the Week
Would you consider becoming an Ultrasound Practitioner? Why/why not?
Medical Positioning has created a resource center for sonographers. Find informative article, links to latest news, exchange ideas or scanning tips, talk frankly and openly about equipment and have a place to turn to for expert advice in a challenging situation.

Yes- I would consider becoming an US practitioner because
1) There is a strong need to have sonographers in middle-car giver positions (many are already serving in this capacity unofficially)and
2) it would open doors that currently do not exist in terms of professional recognition, increased salary as well as greater opportunities.
I beleive the role will happen but when remains to be seen.

Yes, I too would consider becoming a US practitioner because it allows for another "rung" on the career ladder. Currently, if you chose to work in a laboratory setting, you can either scan or be in management. Mgmt isn't a good fit for everyone, and as the sonographer population ages, more and more of us won't physically be able to scan. As a practitioner, we would be able to use years of experience and knowledge plus fill a need that exists in many labs around the country who don't have enough interpreters! Of course, there must be stringent guidelines in place in order to become a practitioner and practitioners should be required to follow the same guidelines outlined by ICAEL for interpreting physicians if practicing in an accredited laboratory.
